Not Easy
Decision-making is never easy for anyone. Throughout life—especially during your teen years—you’ll be faced with choices that don’t just impact your day, but potentially your future. This isn’t about choosing what to wear to a party or which song to add to your playlist. We’re talking about decisions that can shape who you become, where you go, and how your life unfolds.
“Crying is all right in its way while it lasts. But you have to stop sooner or later, and then you still have to decide what to do.” — C. S. Lewis
Why It’s Never Easy
Some people seem to make choices as effortlessly as buttering bread. Others agonize over every possible outcome, doubting themselves at every turn. The truth is: both experiences are valid.
You might wonder: Am I making the right choice? What if I regret it? Should I wait?
Sometimes, waiting is wise. Delaying a decision isn’t the same as avoiding it—it’s making room for clarity.
When Not to Decide
There are moments when pressing pause is your best move. Here’s when not to make permanent life decisions:
❌ When You’re Tired or Emotional
High emotions—whether stress, sadness, or even excitement—can cloud judgment. Give yourself time to settle before you choose.
❌ When You’re Under Pressure
Being rushed or pushed by others can lead to decisions that don’t reflect your values. You can say no. You should say no if it doesn’t feel right.
❌ When You’re Unsure
Not every choice is black and white. If you’re unsure, take the time to weigh your options. List the pros and cons. Get perspective.
❌ When You’re Hungry
It might sound silly, but studies show hunger affects your decision-making. You’re more likely to take shortcuts or make impulsive decisions. Always fuel your body before big choices.
What If You Make the Wrong Choice?
Mistakes happen. You won’t always get it right—and that’s okay. What matters is learning from those missteps. Decision-making is like a muscle: the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
You have the power to course-correct. If you’ve chosen something that’s no longer right for you, it’s okay to back out. That takes courage, too.
You’ve Got This
As a teen, you’re standing on the edge of an exciting season: choosing your subjects, your college, your career. These are big steps—but don’t let them overwhelm you. With time, support, and self-reflection, you’ll develop the skills you need to make smart, confident decisions.
And remember—every good decision starts with knowing yourself. Trust that voice inside you. It knows more than you think.
I am so indecisive sometimes. I try, but then I always second guess my decision.
I always have a hard time to make my own decision. I always have so many options and can’t find the right one
I always pray before making big decisions. It helps my mind to be clear and not be distracted by outside emotions like you mentioned. I also seek help from others!
Normally, I would sleep on a decision first and when I still feel the same about it in the morning, I’m going to jump in. Decision making is tough, you’re right. So I make sure I’m calm and able whenever I have to make a decision.
IT seems like so many factors can affect decision-making. It’s a real skill when people can make good decisions under pressure.
Sometimes making a decision can be difficult or worrisome as there is a fear of making the wrong one.

It is never too easy, I agree. I once heard that sleeping it off helps. I tried it and it worked. Your mind is fresh after waking up and it’s easier to make up your mind when you’re thinking is clear.

One of my biggest issues with making decisions is definitely feeling external pressure to make one choice or another. It also adds pressure on making a decision when others are counting on you to make it for them.
It is easy to make a rash decision when you’re under pressure. That rarely if ever pays off though.

I am decisive and a risk taker so if my decision goes sideways I am wiling to make a next one, take another risk This came after spending too much time allowing others to make decisions for me or try to define me. Once I knew who and whose I am, it became very simple.

You are right. Whenever I have to make a big one and I still can’t decide, I just sleep it off. The next day, when I’m feeling refreshed, I am able to think clearly and I get a lot of fresh ideas.
