Although it is a constant and ever-present condition in everyone’s existence, it is how we use that wind to our advantage by not walking through the desert of affliction but by changing the inner process of thinking. Planning for the future begins with taking small steps in the right direction and not reflecting back into the past, but learning from it, for sure. The past certainly helps build part of who you are today, it shapes the way you see things and experience events.

Here are a couple of things you can do to start the ball rolling now already and get your life ready for the big changes that will happen as you grow older. Sometimes you have to let go of the things that are not good for you. Often this comes in the form of people. You may have a couple of friends that don’t really want the best for you, or you may be in a position that is not 100% good for your emotional well-being.   •  Move on

If you like to keep yourself “stuck” in a rut, you’re not alone, trust me. Give yourself the greatest gift you can give by cultivating the skill of moving on. Some things deserve to be left behind. Like a debt that’s already been paid. Or a friend who’s already asked for forgiveness. Or a problem that’s already been solved. Sometimes we “save things” for another day and it can make the road that leads to the future a long one.

We don’t always have control over the opportunities that come our way, but when they do, take your opportunities with both hands, don’t let them slip away. In this way, you begin to build your future one brick at a time. Some people’s opportunities offer a truckload of bricks, others get it one brick a month – it doesn’t matter – keep building.

  • Seek

Keep looking for wisdom in everything. Be curious, ask questions, and learn all you can. This way you’ll keep growing. If you can, seek out the good in people and in situations

  • Maintain

One way you won’t be able to build a future is if you don’t have the strength and energy to do it. Eat well, think well and do daily maintenance on what you build in your life.

  • Be smart

Steer clear of things you know don’t lift you up. Engage in the things you know will inspire and motivate you.

  1. Thank you for touching on this very important subject. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) – I have worked with some many clients who are impacted by Hopelessness. I completely agree with your suggestions for how to manage Hopelessness. I definitely will be sharing this resource with friends and family who might find it helpful.

  2. This is good information. We have to make sure we surround ourselves with people and things that give us hope. Thanks for sharing these tips. Everybody has hard times, but we have to push true.

  3. The part about letting go made me remember how I had to forgive someone for something. I was carrying so much resentment around and the moment I forgave (not forgot, just forgave), I felt lighter and freer.

  4. I don’t want to be stuck in my rut. It’s really, really hard to find the right opening though. I’ve gotten a lot of closed doors lately. I’m not used to it. I don’t like it.

  5. And don’t forget to keep pushing ahead. As long as you are still here, then you are not done yet. Sometimes plans A, B, or C does not work out but keep pushing till you hit Z and sometimes you’ll have to start the alphabet all over again.

  6. These are such great tools to remember. We all experience moments in our lives where we feel a little helpless. I find that starting my day in silence and prayer helps to set up my mental energy for the day. I can definitely notice a difference in myself when I don’t begin the day this way. It’s a practice that i’m really working to build constantly. Thank you for the post.
